It’s simply amazing how much rain we’ve had in the past three weeks. Luckily, it dried out enough yesterday so that I could mow the lawn, but the skies just opened up again – 1.3 inches in about 30 minutes.

An interesting gardening accident…
So about a month ago, I got two morning glories (‘Grandpa Ott) from the Natural Gardener. At least that’s what the pots said. While the leaves looked exactly like morning glories, the flowers definitely were not. Brian says they’re ‘moonflowers.’ I’d never seen these before. They’re very interesting. Luckily, my morning glories from last year…
Greetings from Houston, Texas!
Last weekend was our annual ‘double performance’ weekend at Houston Grand Opera. Friday night was ‘Sweeney Todd‘ (they’ve started including one musical in the season) and Saturday was ‘Die Walküre‘ I have a thing about knives and straight razors, so I was nauseous after Sweeney. This was the second time I’d seen, Walküre. I’d forgotten…
Greetings from Portland, Oregon!
So last week, I was at another Department of Labor conference, this time, in Portland, Oregon. This was my first trip to Portland – a rainy ‘Austin of the Northwest.’ However, it was only rainy on the first day; the remaining two were what you might call ‘Chamber of Commerce Weather.’ On my free afternoon,…
Greetings from Washington D.C.!
So another Department of Labor conference in Washington. This year, there was snow. And cold. When I walked around the Mall taking these photos, it was 24 degrees. When I left on Friday, it was 7.
And it’s the Beagle!
So we’re very excited that a beagle, ‘Miss P,’ won the 2015 Westminster Dog Show! Our Annabelle is Miss P’s great aunt. You can certainly tell the family resemblance when it comes to chowing down.
Der Stammbaum
Finally, after more than three years of on-and-off work, I’ve completed revisions and published the 2015 edition of Der Stammbaum der Familie Brunnemann. The Stammbaum traces my Brunnemann family from 1640s Pomerania to 1905 in Flatonia, Texas. This is the type of genealogy I enjoy the most – it’s literally history in your hands. It…
Forbidden Corner
I found this fantastic garden on ‘Atlas Obscura.’ It’s in Coverham, England. The very definition of whimsical, I think. Forbidden Corner
Winter in West Texas
So I was back in Abilene this weekend. Hopefully the end is in sight for that – and it’s not a freight train. The drive from Austin can be pretty bleak at this time of year, but I kept my eyes open (and had to take a detour), so I found some interesting sights. This…
Let’s Talk About Soup
So it’s definitely soup weather these days in Austin – and I love it! We’ve gotten several large bunches of carrots the past two months in our weekly Farmhouse Delivery box. Luckily, we’ve run across several great carrot soup recipes. My favourite to date is this Fennel and Carrot soup from Bondir, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Silky and…
